Mantis Gown Tweaked

Hey guys! I can tell you I'm feeling better AND I start my new job tomorrow! So here's a tweaked version of Mantis' Gown. While coloring it, I kept coming across very annoying issues because of the line-art. So I messed with the perspective a bit. Colored version will be up on Friday with the speed paint

Hey guys, the speed draw might be canceled for tomorrow but I do have a preview. Here's some color tests of Mantis' gown. And believe it or not, even the most goofy looking designs have reasons behind them. Can you figure out which ones are based on REAL praying mantis'?

1. Gold Flakes-- This was just a warm up, using the same color design as Mantis' usual armor. But then I had fun with with the spatter brush, making Mantis look like she was covered in gold sparkles

2. Ruby and Rouge-- If you haven't noticed yet, Mantis loves her pinks and purples, so I went with a darker set of pinks. No secret inspiration for this one.

3. Orchid Mantis-- THIS one is my favorite color scheme, because it's based on the design of the Orchid Praying Mantis, the animal Mantis' more newer design is based from! This type of mantis looks just like an orchid, giving it perfect camouflage for hunting and hiding. It also look freaking beautiful

4. Young Orchid Mantis-- You know what I learned about the Orchid Mantis while looking for reference? That it starts off brown and orange before it molts into a pretty and pink adult

5. Testing 1, 2, 3-- Okay, this one is really just a mess. Testing out strips, shading, and even a slight skin tone change and hair change.

6 Devil's Flower-- Here's another one based on a real animal - The Devil's Flower Mantis. This bug has a lot of different version of the species, but i went with this color combination http://imgur.com/a/up6hh

7- Green is Good-- This one is just a test in green shades, since it use to be Mantis's main color.

8- Jeweled Praying Mantis-- I SWEAR there is a real mantis with this color scheme. It's called the Jeweled Praying Mantis. And you can see it right here if you don't believe me: http://2ngaw.com/jeweled-flower-mantis-cutest-insect/

9- Golden Oldie-- Another goofy one, based on Mantis' old look before her redesign.

Honestly, I love this dress and I wanted to see how Mantis looked in it now that her whole body type has changed. Next week, I'll be coloring the dress

From left to right we have her usual armor, something dressy, swim wear, and for fun, I dressed her up in Torg's uniform.

I might hate skimpy Halloween costumes, but Mantis does not. Come to think about it, she's probably my only character that adores wearing super sexy outfits

Whew, finally finished. I showed you guys the WIP for this weeks ago, and as you can see. I changed the poses of the characters a lot. And some of you may noticed that Mantis has gone through a SIGNIFICANT color redesign!

Week of Sketches Day 3: Torg and Mantis warm ups

These are a  lot more recent. When I'm getting ready to draw, I tend to do a few quick warm ups in my tiny little sketch book to get me in the the heads of my characters. Most of these are very fast and gestural

Torg is very strong. And kinda nervous.

So something has come to my attention. In the left picture, it looks like Torg is putting a gun to his head. Don't worry, he's not! He's grabbing Mantis' hand because she's trying to put her arm around him. Sorry for the confusion.

Poor Torg. All he wants to do is help people and he's stuck dealing with a maniac.

Yo!

Here are two "posters" I've been working on. Mantis' poster is based old mystery and drama movie posters, while Torg's is based on WW1 and WW2 posters. Some of you might notice a similarity between Torg's poster and my older illustration, CHOP. Which would be correct. Both are inspired by  the style of Soviet posters from that era. And more will be on the way. The Galactic Rangers really like their propaganda.

Good news! I've got most of my programs working again! Still having an issue with After Effects, so my plans (wink wink nudge nudge) are still gonna be on hold.

But I will continue the week of sketches! Next stuff will be doodles from my sketch book

Mantis and Torg- Yin and Yang- WIP

Yo! I know it's been a while. I was going to wait until I had something complete, but now that windows 10 has royally screwed up ALL of my adobe programs, I decided you guys were waiting long enough!

So this week, you're gonna be seeing my WIP, my sketch book, etc (pssst. It's gonna be a lot of Galactic Adventure stuff). Meanwhile, I'm gonna try and get bloody windows 10 to bloody work with my bloody adobe programs. And start relearning GIMP and Windows Movie Maker

As for the picture? Not much I wanna say at this point. It's was a quick drawing I wanna clean up. I have a few anatomical errors to fix before I do the final lineart and color

WE ARE OPEN!

So here we are. After being away for ages, I have returned. Hopefully for a long time.

As I said above, I won't go into why I've been away. Not yet. I'll be using it as examples when I talk about important issues in the future.

Galactic Adventures sketches continued

Hey guys!  This week I'll be working on the site some more, so here are some more sketches from Galactic Adventures. I'm continuing to rework some pieces of the story, so that also means redesigning some of the places, and equipment.

Hey look! Backgrounds! Felt good to drawn the planet from the story again. It's been a long time. The planet Torg is on is covered in water and fairly dense forests of crystalized plants. Even the hard soil has bits of crystal sediments stuck in the ground.

And this is one of the underground tunnels caused by the water. Even underground, the crystalized plantlife grows. In the dark, the plants all light up like lanterns.

A simple sketch of the bridge of Torg's ship. Trying to work out the angles of a scene.

Mantis's ship, which I'm currently redesigning.

And weapons! I should note that everything about Torg is rounded and curved, while Mantis' items are sharp and sleek. So while Mantis' guns look like sharp sniper guns and shotguns, Torg's looks like... a super soaker.

Also, Mantis carries darts, knives and little bombs shaped like praying mantis heads...What?

Con Sketches- Mantis and Torg

Hey guys! here are this weeks post. It's a bunch of sketches of Mantis and Torg I did at the convention. And this should be the last of the rougher sketches for a bit. Next week will be some more refined 

things.

Very quick sketches of Mantis i drew during the Laurie B. panel.

This is a simple exercise i'll do when working on poses. I'll keep the torso in about the same position, but the head and limbs i'll just keep redrawing over and over again in different poses. It helps me mix and match certain poses and helps me notice things I wouldn't have before.

Hey! Look! It's an actual landscape... sketch. The feed back I got from my sketch book was basically "Do you do any backgrounds?"

Ah. Right. Forgot about those. Guess I've been focusing on character and fashion design lately, I haven't really posted any scenery art. I'll have to get on that, heh.

So here is a quick sketch of Torg in a tree, overlooking a space station. (Yes, I know you can't tell due to lack of detail. I've been using a very tiny sketchbook lately.)

Torg sketches! (I need to post more of these), and his trusty robotic sidekick. And to repeat: Torg and bikes do not mix.

Edit May 21: Oh, forgot to mention: I was trying out a bit of a new look for Torg. Since I haven't drawn him in ages, and had no reference at the con, I basically just drew him as the first image that came to mind: Two eyes instead of one, a more human looking torso and different markings. Like i said, it was just an experiment, since I haven't drawn him in so long. I like that he's a bit buffer, and I like the new markings, but I'm not sure if i'll stick to the more human features.

Mantis Fashion pt2

More "Dress up time" for Mantis! Tonight we have sleepwear, and two versions of her winter gear-- the outer layer, and her thermal wear to go under it. 

All of Mantis' clothes have elements from her original design. Not exactly normal, but Mantis lives in a scifi pulp referenced world, hunts aliens in space, and has legs the size of large toothpicks. Nope. No normal here

So if the April fools joke wasn't a clue, I've been taking a look at some of my old comic ideas. Specificly, Galactic Adventures. And since I'm still on a costume fix, heres Mantis in a Gown:

So who is Mantis? I'll let you know soon. It might be better to explain when you're not looking at Mantis is the frilliest thing I have ever drawn her in. Plus, I really really want to post some better quality of her Character Design sketches, plus a few new ones... now where did I put those...?
