Sketch Dump!

Alright, I've got a new computer and I'm back in action at last! Hopefully i'll be getting some more frequent updates for the site going soon. I've got MEH on the way in the next months and I'm working on a little side project for the Sketch-Log.

 

But for now, here's some sketches of htings if been working on over the months, and a couple of things before my computer went capoot.

Felt like drawing Miyazaki cats. So i looked into one of my favorite Miyazaki films, The Cat Returns!

 

 

Last Valentines Day, I mentioned on the sketchlog that I had originally planned a very very silly article, buuuut it never took off because I got sick. Welp, this is it: My reactions to the Arrow TV show, with a valentines day theme.

Galactic Adventures sketches continued

Hey guys!  This week I'll be working on the site some more, so here are some more sketches from Galactic Adventures. I'm continuing to rework some pieces of the story, so that also means redesigning some of the places, and equipment.

Hey look! Backgrounds! Felt good to drawn the planet from the story again. It's been a long time. The planet Torg is on is covered in water and fairly dense forests of crystalized plants. Even the hard soil has bits of crystal sediments stuck in the ground.

And this is one of the underground tunnels caused by the water. Even underground, the crystalized plantlife grows. In the dark, the plants all light up like lanterns.

Mantis's ship, which I'm currently redesigning.

And weapons! I should note that everything about Torg is rounded and curved, while Mantis' items are sharp and sleek. So while Mantis' guns look like sharp sniper guns and shotguns, Torg's looks like... a super soaker.

Also, Mantis carries darts, knives and little bombs shaped like praying mantis heads...What?

The White Ash Forest

Okay, this technically isn't a new. It's a small excerpt from a chapter of Sanctuary: World of Nomads.  Blip and April, two children from Sanctuary, enter the White Ash Forest, in search of the witch who lives in it's center. Done with pencil crayon, white paint and photoshop.

Now, you may have noticed that I have a.... lot of story ideas. Some are half written, others have characters all drawned out and others have a few comic pages laid out. Mostly because, over the last 5 years of school, I wanted to try as many new things as I could. Different genres, ratings, character types etc. I would be working hard on one story, and then step away from it so I could try a new genre or character design for an assignment. And then return to an older idea with fresh eyes. On the one hand, it gave me a lot of new experience and great characters that I love so much! On the other hand...

I have at least 20 different ideas now... all different lengths, genres, formats, ratings and completion rates.

But out of all those idea, S: WON is probably the one I've worked longest on because it's such a long story and i started working on it when i had near to no experience in writing. I stepped away from it for the last couple of years, but it pops back up when I had an assignment that really fit the something from the story.

Now that I'm out of school, I can start working on some final drafts. Can't say which one I'll be working first. I'll probably bounce between a few, but I do want to focus on the shorter ones first, and work on the longer ones on the side. Soon, Sanctuary. Soon.

Galactic Adventures: Landscapes

Part of my Galactic Adventures idea. These are two landscape images from the planet Captain Tork and Mantis fight on. 

Mostly done with ink and marker. I'm not totally satisfied with the photoshop effects, like the glow of the water and the smoke. Other then that, I'm really happy with it.

Galactic Adventures: Volume 1 title page

After saving the Princess of Erosia, Galactic Forces member, Captain Tork, crashes on an unidentified planet. As he looks for a way to repair his ship, he discovers that he is being hunted down by the insane bountyhunter, Mantis. But when Mantis betrays her employer, they must both team up to survive an onslaught of rival bounty hunters.

Kinda a pulp parody thing. Yes, yet another story idea. Which one will I focus on first, I wonder?

Amish Robot: Character Design

The Amish Robot

This happy guy was only meant to be a normal worker robot. But after hearing about the Amish life from his creator, a former Amish himself, the robot decided to quit his job and become Amish! However, the Amish community he's trying to join has a zero tolerance policy against technology.

But that doesn't stop him from trying

Heres the original character design for the Amish Robot. Did this for an assignment last year. This was also very early in my photoshop knowledge.

The Amish Robot. It's a short, 5 page one-shot featuring my favorite little optimistic steam-bot as he tries to prove himself to a local Amish Community. No offense to the Amish is meant here.


It was created for ACAD's comic book club. I, along with several other students, came together to create an anthology of comics, which we sold at the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo of 2010. Now, the club is no longer together, but we will be selling the book again at this years convention!
The book is titled Acadian Comics and consists of about 13 short comics (about 3-5 pages each) and is selling for $10 a book and there will be some other art to buy as well. See you there!


Fun fact: The Amish Robot's "master" (name not revealed yet) use to be Amish. But during rumspringa (which is when young Amish members leave the community to get visit the outside world and then decide whether they want to stay or not), he decided to leave permanently and become a mechanic. And yes, some Amish communities do accept outsiders. Not all but some. I did quite a bit of research before i wrote this.
