Witchsona- BlottyInk

For halloween-- My witchsona! I imagine Blotty being an Ink witch, with giant nerd glasses and stains of ink and paint all over her clothes. And a dirty, ink covered moped, hehe

There's also another picture of her with a slightly different outfit in my big character crowd scene from "We Are Open"

The Ink Tests

I didn't participate in Inktober this year, but I did decide to test on some new pens on some old drawings. Including some drawings from halloween last year, some character designs and fanart for Steven Universe and Stardew Valley!

Weekly Sketches Day 4: Cave of the Forgotten Goddess

Time for something really recent! An experiment of drawing in pen without pencil guidelines. Pretty happy with it. The lighting is suppose to be coming from the an unnatrual glow at the bottom of the waterfall. But some of the shading got a little wonky

Snake Skin Boots: Nikita Bust

Ah, the third picture from my "Medusa in the Wild West" idea (well fourth if you count her cameo in the last comic). Now with it's own title: Snake Skin Boots. And Nikita, our "Medusa" for the storyline.

I've developed the idea a lot since then. This here was an experiment in color as I finallized the color scheme, and textures, which were the most troubling things while working on her design. I went through a lot of texture designs and colors before deciding the "keep it simple, stupid" approach would be best.

That's all I can get into for now. Spoilers ;)

Sketch Dump!

Alright, I've got a new computer and I'm back in action at last! Hopefully i'll be getting some more frequent updates for the site going soon. I've got MEH on the way in the next months and I'm working on a little side project for the Sketch-Log.

But for now, here's some sketches of htings if been working on over the months, and a couple of things before my computer went capoot.

Working on the main weapon/armor for a character. Here are some of the inital designs:

Felt like drawing Miyazaki cats. So i looked into one of my favorite Miyazaki films, The Cat Returns!

Last Valentines Day, I mentioned on the sketchlog that I had originally planned a very very silly article, buuuut it never took off because I got sick. Welp, this is it: My reactions to the Arrow TV show, with a valentines day theme.

Working out a helmet design:

Tried my hand at some slime monsters:

And now some random characters that (mostly) have nothing to do with each other:

I have no idea. I really don't.

So thats it now. There will be some more refined, finished work in early June.

Art Month Challenge Day 25: Gunslinging Serpent

Thought I'd show my progress on something. A while back, I posted a picture for a "medusa in the wild west" idea. I've been working on the story this month, and her costume design. This isn't the final design. I'm still doing research on the era and gathering reference material, such as clothes and weapons (and more snake pictures). I'm going to be putting details and designs on the buckles, guns and clothing when I'm done.

Warm up week part 2

Hey guys! Warm up week is back! I'm feeling better, so I'll be posting a few small warm up sketches this week, as was last weeks plan. I got alot going on this week and well... this will keep me sane.

Oh, and Carpel tunnel has been attacking my hand this week, so todays warm up is left handed drawings!

Nah, just kidding.

Last time I posted a basic drawing my usual style. This little one was made with me experimenting with the history brush. The majority of the drawing was done with it and... honestly, I'm not completely happy with it, but the history brush can create some really nice textures.

Warm Up Week part 1: Davie

Hey guys! So, in order to finish some projects I'm working on, I need to do some warm up exercises. Test out some techniques and such with mediums i haven't work with in a while. And as I do them, I'll be posting them on the site. Heres the first:

This is Davie, your friendly neighborhood baby monster. Color scheme isn't final.

And it took way longer to draw him then it should. Though, a good chunk of that time was spent experimenting with brushes before settling on the settings I wanted. Photoshop has become more of an editing tool for my traditional works. But it's nice to use my tablet again...

This is my usual technique: a sketchy cell shading style. I'll be experimenting with other techniques later on in the week.

The Snake with No Name

Alternate Title: Fist Full of Serpents.

Medusa as a gunslinger in the Wild West. What the hell was I smoking during the con?

So a while back, I made up a Medusa character for a series that is so undeveloped at this point, I’m not even going to go into it right now. But then I came up with this little idea and thought: Huh, that would make a good short story.

So, why would Medusa need guns? Cause she's a good guy now... sort of?

Look, I honestly can't say much without revealing spoilers. Of course the setting is the wild west, and she is the medusa. She is lot less evil and looking for a little redemption due to the things she's done. (There was alot more to the myths then we know). Hence the blindfold. I noticed Medusa is depicted with a bow and arrow, and I pictured her with other long range weapons, like a crossbow and a shot gun. Then I was thinking about her in different eras and, well, this happened.

And i know I said not to worry about anatomy issues, expecially on initial first sketches like this... but holy crud, It has been too long since I drew a gun. Time for some de-rusting.

(Sorry this weeks post is cutting it so close. Lots of stuff going on this week for mothers day. The newest sketch-log article will be up soon)

Zanni Drago: Comic

Okay, here's something i've been meaning to put up for a while now. A fourth year comic project. Idea is simple enough: Make a short comic with no words.

For mine, I created a small scene from one of my stories. Yes, another story idea. Shush (You'll see what I have planned for many of them soon enough).

I'll let you look at the story before I go on...

Ready? Okay.

The story is a fantasy story taking place in a world of humans and dragons. I won't get into the politics just yet, but needless to say, they don't get along. On the human region, Dragons are either slaves or outlaws. The main character here, Zanni, is an entertainer, looking for her missing father. Downside is that Zanni has dragon blood in her, and those horns on her head ain't the easiest to hide, even with her costume. She also has two young dragons as her companions (names withheld due to my decision that i wanted to change them)

The comic depicts an average day for Zanni: Put on a performance, earn some breakfast money, have a small run-in with the local officers, escape in the most flashiest way possible!

Now for the part I hate. The critique.

Okay, since this one is kinda old, I'm gonna just give it a quick run down of things I like and things i'd do differently.

First up, I love some of my drawing in this. True, the anatomy isn't the best, but many of the poses and expressions I wouldn't change, the linework looks really nice (this was an early attempt at pencil only lineart), and despite being one of my earlier attempts at photoshop, I still really like some of the coloring jobs I did. Okay, I would definitely redo the blank backgrounds. It was an experiment and it didn't work. Moving on....

This is probably one of the first comics in a long time where I used extreme perspective. Like a said, not the best. But I'll blame it partly on my novice-ness. And partly on that SLAGGING, BLOOMIN' SKIRT. I don't know if it was the colors, or the design but it was like staring at one of those "fine the hidden picture" images for TEN HOURS. My eyes are turning sand dry from the memory *shudders*. I think next time i'll try a live model of the dress, and see if that will get my head straight.

But the most important thing is wether or not the story translates to someone who knows nothing of the story. Most people understood it, though there are a few things that need work, such as the scenes between Zanni and her dragons.

Overall, ya, I still like it.

The NEXT post on the other hand... i'll be showing early character sketches of Zanni and... some of them were my first attempt at photoshop.

Ya. This is gonna hurt.

Art featured in Chat de BLA theater poster

Hey all! Got an announcement for ya! The Swedish storyteller company, Chat de BLA is using a piece of my work in their theater poster! It's a performance of Haroun and the Sea of Stories performed by a single actor, Deirdre Foster! The performance will be in Geneva in September!

Heres a copy of the flyer. Please note that though the illustration is from my cover image for Haroun and the Sea of Stories, I did not put together the actual flyer:

You can check out the their site here: Chat de BLA

edit: fixed broken link ^_^

The White Ash Forest

Okay, this technically isn't a new. It's a small excerpt from a chapter of Sanctuary: World of Nomads.  Blip and April, two children from Sanctuary, enter the White Ash Forest, in search of the witch who lives in it's center. Done with pencil crayon, white paint and photoshop.

Now, you may have noticed that I have a.... lot of story ideas. Some are half written, others have characters all drawned out and others have a few comic pages laid out. Mostly because, over the last 5 years of school, I wanted to try as many new things as I could. Different genres, ratings, character types etc. I would be working hard on one story, and then step away from it so I could try a new genre or character design for an assignment. And then return to an older idea with fresh eyes. On the one hand, it gave me a lot of new experience and great characters that I love so much! On the other hand...

I have at least 20 different ideas now... all different lengths, genres, formats, ratings and completion rates.

But out of all those idea, S: WON is probably the one I've worked longest on because it's such a long story and i started working on it when i had near to no experience in writing. I stepped away from it for the last couple of years, but it pops back up when I had an assignment that really fit the something from the story.

Now that I'm out of school, I can start working on some final drafts. Can't say which one I'll be working first. I'll probably bounce between a few, but I do want to focus on the shorter ones first, and work on the longer ones on the side. Soon, Sanctuary. Soon.

Crowd Scene

From "Sanctuary: World of Nomads", one of the series I'm currently working on. Hand inked and colored with marker, and edited on photoshop. All the characters and products here are my creation... except one. Can you spot him?

Morbia Circus

So I found out this was still kicking around in my drafts. I was thinking about this story the other day so I figured now would be a good time to post it.

Written back in '11:

Here's my Visual Development Book from last semester. (Now fixed up a little)

The story is about a group of circus performers who are turned into zombies but for reasons unknown, are not mindless. In order to survive, they put on performances and make the audience think they are "pretending" to be zombies. As they travel, they are looking for a way to turn human again and the answers to their mysterious circumstances.

The book is written from the point of view of RingMaster Skoo, as he talks about each of the main characters, the animals (which are also zombies except for one dog), their vehicles and home.

The story will be an episodic dark comedy with focus on the comedy part.

Cover is digital. Background pattern is digital. Characters are painted in FW inks and type is drawn in ink and colored digitally.
